Understanding Prevented Planting Coverage

Prevented Plant (PP) is an essential feature of crop insurance that provides financial protection when adverse weather conditions prevent you from planting by an expected date.

To Qualify for PP

  • Must be prevented from planting an insured crop due to an insured cause of loss that impacts the surrounding area.
  • The acreage must be at least the lesser of 20 acres or 20% of the unit.

Coverage Level

  • Corn: 55% PP guarantee, but can be increased to 60% for an additional premium
  • Dry beans: 50% of guarantee
  • Potatoes and sugar beets: 45% of guarantee

Losses

  • Notice of loss must be submitted within 72 hours after determining a crop cannot be planted.

  • Policyholders must provide acceptable records demonstrating cause of loss during insurance period.

  • No payment will be made if timely notice is not given.

  • Only one prevented planting indemnity can be paid on the same acreage in the same crop year, unless special conditions are met. 

Available to all qualifying producers regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, political beliefs, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity, in any program or activity conducted of funded by USDA (not all bases apply to all programs).
