Hail and Wind Insurance

Protects against yield reduction and damage caused by hail or fire.

Crop Hail Insurance Overview

Understanding Hail and Wind Insurance

Hail and Wind insurance provides the grower protection against yield reduction caused by hail and/or fire. Other coverages available include transit, vandalism, lightning, fire department service charge and/or stored grain. Optional endorsements are available for wind damage and/or replant coverage.

Crop Hail coverage gives you acre by acre protection up to the actual cash value of your crop. A Crop Hail policy expands protection by covering perils otherwise not included in most traditional crop insurance policies. There are many Crop Hail policy options for individual coverage or that work with your Federal crop policy for total risk management protection.

How Crop Hail Works

A Crop Hail policy can be purchased before or during a crop's growing season. Features and benefits of Crop Hail include:

  • Hail protection
  • Fire protection
  • Coverage for fire department service charges
  • Transit coverage
  • Catastrophic loss award
  • Replanting coverage

Coverage Level

Crop Hail insurance is available up to the full value of the crop, subject to AIP coverage limits.

  • To be eligible, you must have a personal monetary risk if the crop is damaged.

  • Landlords are only eligible with a shared lease. They are not eligible if they have a cash lease with no monetary interest in the crop.

Claims and Indemnities

  • Contact your insurance specialist immediately if you think you have hail damage. A notice of loss must be submitted within 10 days of the damaging storm.

  • The percentage of loss determined by a crop adjuster will be used to calculate the indemnity. Final indemnity will be determined by the endorsement and coverage amounts selected.

Available to all qualifying producers regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, political beliefs, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity, in any program or activity conducted of funded by USDA (not all bases apply to all programs).
